I regularly do talks at schools as part of the AVA PetPEP programme which aims to teach children about responsible pet ownership and safety around pets. An important part of the discussion with the children involves talking about how to keep pets healthy and providing for their needs. I always have lots of enthusiastic responses from the little people about what they can do to help their pets stay healthy and some of the warning signs that there may be something wrong. In essence, it’s the same sort of discussion I have with owners at their pet’s annual health check.

So what happens at an annual health check?

An annual check is the perfect opportunity for you to discuss any concerns you may have about your pet’s well-being. Whether it’s a medical issue (e.g. itchy skin or ears), a dietary issue (e.g. which food is best for a young working dog) or a behavioural issue (e.g. Molly’s getting more afraid of loud noises), it’s important to bring these up at the consult.

The vet performs a full physical exam and identifies any problems or potential issues she may find. She will discuss possible causes and any further tests that may be necessary. She is there to discuss these with you, so feel free to ask questions if you need more information. If medications are required she will prescribe them and give you instructions on administration. And if there are any preventative measures you can take to stop a condition from getting worse, then you are able to discuss these too.

If your pet is healthy and due for a vaccination, then this can be given at the annual check to protect against life-threatening diseases.

This is also a good time to discuss the best programme for preventing heartworm, intestinal worms, ticks, fleas etc.

Why is an annual check so important?

It’s true, our pets are generally a lot more stoic than we are, but that doesn’t mean they don’t need check-ups! In fact, because they age differently from us, an annual check-up for a pet is equivalent to a human only going for a check once every five years! And we all know preventing and detecting problems early is a lot better than waiting for it to be debilitating and serious.

So when the next reminder arrives, don’t put it off. Get your pal checked out so he stays the happy, healthy buddy you love!
